Omni Orbital Railgun
Hold to aim, attack or let go to fire (2 min recharge)
The Watcher has had it. It isn't the same gun.
32 blocks across, in every colour.
Aim it at the Bloom, 50 blocks or more off its mouth.
How you get it
- Build the Orbital Railgun round the Infused Orbital Core. Building it wakes three more places.
- Bring back their three parts: the Nuclear Reactor Core (Ashford Nuclear Plant), the Discharge Destabilizer (Meridian Laboratory) and the Vial of Dark Matter Blood (Blackwater Station).
- Craft the Ray Gun round the railgun and the three parts, or bring them all to a Forsaken Altar and let the Watcher build it over the altar.
- The Watcher wants it: "give it here." Drop it near him (Q) or use it on him. It floats up into his hands, rings of glyphs turning round it, light drawn in from everywhere, and he gives you back the Omni: black, its colours running.
drop it. let me have it. it isn't finished.
they could never finish it. it needed something they didn't have.
the dark in it. mine. hold still.
there. the omni. it's yours.
now go to it. stand off its mouth - fifty blocks, no nearer, or it takes you with it.
aim it at the flower. hold it on it. and fire.
Meridian's director had worked out what they were missing: "We can't finish it. It needs something we don't have. Something that knows the dark."
The Ray Gun it was
The Ray Gun is the Orbital Railgun mod (by Mishkis, from Rayness's Renewed port, MIT licence) built into Static Hollow. Hold use and its sight opens over your view, a ring on the ground where you aim, out to 300 blocks; attack, or let go after a second, and it fires. For four seconds it locks on; then for thirty-two the sky over the spot comes apart, a dome, six spheres flung out and back, columns of light; from twenty seconds everything near is dragged in toward it; at thirty-six seconds a column of light 24 blocks across comes down the whole height of the world, and everything in it is gone. The Omni's strike is a third again as wide, in every colour, and louder than anything else in the game.
SENTINEL
SENTINEL is the gun above the sky that the Rosemont garrison built before the city fell, and never got to fire. The Orbital Railgun talks to it; the Uplink Station is where the garrison talked to it. The standing orders call it "a weapon of last resort", and its core has a third socket the engineers call "the governor". Nobody was ever told what goes in it. Meridian's director knew better: "Garrison Command thinks it's a safety. It isn't. It's a throttle."
The Omni Ray
Stand fifty blocks or more off the changed Bloom's mouth ("TOO CLOSE - back off" otherwise), aim the Omni at the flower and fire. The camera is taken, and since 1.43.2 the Watcher takes you up with him in a spill of ink, to watch from the air over the petals.
The sky, over the changed Bloom
???look up.
???come up here. you'll want to see this.
SENTINEL // DEORBIT BURN - ATMOSPHERIC ENTRY
???it was always up there. waiting for someone to call it down.
SENTINEL // RETRO BURN - DESCENT ARRESTED
SENTINEL // ALL SYSTEMS ONLINE - OMNI ARRAY DEPLOYING
OMNI ARRAY // ALIGNING
???everything it has. all in one place.
???now it has nowhere to hide.
TARGET LOCKED
OMNI ARRAY // FIRE
WARNING // COUNTER-BEAM - OUTPUT FALLING
???it's fighting it.
If the Bloom has eaten too much:
???it's eaten too much. it's too strong.
???take mine. all of it.
OUTPUT 1000% // SOURCE UNKNOWN
If it hasn't:
???it doesn't need me. not this time.
OMNI ARRAY // OVERDRIVE - SAFETIES OFF
OUTPUT 400% // HOLDING
SENTINEL comes down out of its orbit: a star that moves, then a fireball burning through the air, its trail across the sky, the sonic boom, its retro thrusters. It stops right over the Bloom's mouth. Light comes in off the horizon; five rings of glyphs close in one by one round the line down to its mouth. It fires a beam of plasma, white-hot at the core, its edges split into colour. The Bloom fires back, its own beam up out of its mouth, every colour gone wrong, and drives the Omni's back up toward the station, the more it's eaten the nearer. Then it's driven down into its mouth.
The blast: a breath of white, the fireball going dark in its own smoke, its shock going out at the speed of sound, heard when it gets to you: a crack like the sky splitting, and a roar rolling round the land for a long time after. A title card reads THE OMNI RAY: the bloom is dead. the watcher rests.
Taken back
The first time you carry the Omni off the Bloom's blight, the camera is taken again and the Watcher is in your way. He pulls the gun out of your hands, tears open a rift into his realm, green fire licking up its edges, and throws it in. It's gone for good. This earns Zero Responsibility.
wait. not so fast.
i'll take that.
it wouldn't be fair to let you take such a destructive toy with you, to use on everything.
from what i see, i see great power. great potential. but zero responsibility for life.
i can see the thoughts in your head, you know.
it goes where it'll be safe. in my realm. for the future.
And the first time anyone puts the Ray Gun together in a crafting grid afterwards, he's there at the table and pulls its recipe up out of it, a page of light with the gun's plan on it, and burns it in green fire. It's gone from every recipe book, and nothing will make the Ray Gun again. This earns Always Persistent.
you're always persistent.
i'll take this too.
now it can't ever be made again.
The Omni's Heart
In Chapter Six you find what he did with it. In one of three keeps in the Watcher's Vault, on a plinth, is the Omni's Heart: "What made the Omni more than a gun: every colour at once, turning, in a cage of its own light. He took it out of it." Its tooltip reads KEPT FOR THE FUTURE.
it's come for what i kept. the omni. the carrier. my first reel.
get to them before it does. bring them here.
Bring it to his desk in the Watch, with the other two things he kept, and the Projectionist comes for them. On the Other Side, at two thirds of the fight with the Viewer, he loads it into the lamp of his last projector: every colour at once, thrown out over the dark into its eye. It reels, blinded. That earns Every Colour at Once.
